"Accordioning" What is it?
Breaking new ground in technology always always means the invention of new language / nomenclature must be developed. This is because we do not have words today to describe things which did not exist yesterday.
It was true with radio (“tubes”), trains (“carriage”), medicine (“vaccine”), computing (“chips”) and very very true in the linguistic-octagon of law (“deposition” and PMK/PMQ (“Person Most Knowledgeable / Person Most Qualified”), and more…
In AI it is very very very true.
We are stepping out into the horizon. Today what we can do, and tomorrow what we will do, is not entirely known. It is scary and exciting.
We will have to not just cope with these changes, but also understand them and share them with others. To do so we will need new ways to express what is done/happening.
Today on the AI Counsel Podcast, I tripped over words to find the right one — and borrowing from my internal RAM of neural network (from my finance background) grabbing the term I felt best fit translated into a new context — ACCORDION.
In project finance, often the lender and borrower will engage in an “Accordion Note.” This is a loan document which sets out terms, but then (as often the total budget is not known), the amount loaned will be not specified (as it will change over time).
[Self-interested lawyers will not tell you. They will want you to pay them for a new Note each time a loan is made.]
With the Accordion Note it specifies the terms for the current loan tranche, and specifies that the parties anticipate further tranches, and to those further tranches the following additional terms will apply.
Effectively then the parties can proceed with their project w/o instant involvement of attorney and just request and disburse, also allowing business priorities to dictate project finance instead of “waiting on Legal.”
I thought about how our AI outputs are often too general or too specific. So we “adjust” them with further prompts to refine.
You are thinking (ABC) and the AI output goes (XYZ) or maybe its partly correct (ABZ).
So you need to adjust with another query/prompt.
[Yes prompt engineering is a whole cottage industry and do not get me started. We are talking about after all YOUR meaning and YOUR BRAIN and desired specific result and not generalized aggregated amalgamated results of generic pap.
The meaning you alone seek to derive is personal to you and can be more simple or more complex or convex or even parabolic.
Think of a box of crayons.
Often one of the four colors or a combination of two of the colors is all you need.
But sometimes you need more specific (user) context outputs and/or nuance and/or detail.
You need the BIG box of 62 crayons (with sharpener), or maybe just some of the 'shade families' in there.
In the Law context and other professional disciplines it is especially important and often more important than important - critical.
With terms of art and legal outcomes turning on minute variations in fact -- precise calibration to your own mental need is key.
And so you adjust and stretch or shrink the outputs.
AI “Accordioning” is what I call stretching and shrinking data and data outputs.
It is user specific and directed zooms in and out.
It is human AI.
Accordioning is the human, and hyper-specific, version of the context window.

NEW TECH = NEW LANGUAGE (Considerations)
New technology often leads to the introduction of new vocabulary and terms to describe novel concepts, devices, and processes.
Existing words may take on new meanings or contexts when applied to technological innovations.
Language acquisition and development:
Technology can influence how language is learned and used, especially in children
Communication methods:
New technologies often introduce new ways of communicating (e.g., texting, social media), which can impact language use and structure.
These new communication methods may lead to the development of new linguistic conventions or shorthand (-AIC New terms and names for things (LOL))
Adaptation of existing language:
Rather than inventing entirely new languages, it's more common for existing languages to adapt and incorporate new terms and concepts related to technology. (-AIC “AI Accordioning” from “Accordion Note”)
This process is ongoing as technology continues to evolve.
Specialized terminology:
Specific fields of technology often develop their own specialized vocabularies or jargon, which could be considered a form of new language within a particular context. (-AIC Just think about prompts, context window, llms, gen-ai, more…)
Global communication:
Technology has facilitated global communication, which can lead to the blending of languages and the adoption of terms across linguistic boundaries.
-AIC : AI, through instant language translation and interpretation, will REMOVE LANGUAGE AS A BARRIER IN MANKIND, to a large extent, especially in the business context — in time joining all of us in what I have called the
