OAI + Lexis = A very big deal indeed.
While we were all sleeping on a plenitude of other AI headlines, last weekend :
OpenAI and LexisNexis Partner to Revolutionize Legal Technology with Custom AI Solutions!
In a HUGE development for AI + Law technology sector, LexisNexis Legal & Professional, a global leader in legal research and analytics, announced a deepened partnership with OpenAI on February 27, 2025.
This collaboration will integrate OpenAI’s cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) models and APIs
…across LexisNexis’ extensive ecosystem of products, marking a transformative step in delivering personalized, generative AI solutions tailored to the complex needs of legal professionals.
It means a major bug in AI for Law (namely the unspeakably large and profuse LLM with data galore, including legally-sounding not Law like Ally MacBeal and John Grisham) is on the way to solution.
He who controls the parsing (of a database they have already parsed) controls the universe.
Background ++
LexisNexis has been leveraging OpenAI’s large language models (LLMs) since 2022 as part of its multi-model approach to legal AI.
However, this new agreement takes their collaboration to the next level.
By directly integrating OpenAI’s latest APIs and fine-tuning custom models, LexisNexis seeks to enhance its flagship offerings, such as the Lexis+ AI legal workflow solution and the LexisNexis Protégé personalized AI assistant.
PRACTITIONER NOTE: Will my legal search queries (and client info for workflows) (privileged, work product) now additionally be in the hands of OAI?
What it means is that Lexis dbs now get the HYPER FUNCTION of SOTA LLM on their own secluded datasets!
Hyperdrive Legal Resaearch.
Not just research but also sophisticated legal workflows, including advanced “chain of thought” reasoning—a capability critical for agentic AI systems that plan and execute multi-step tasks.
Agenic.
“Draft me a thing, then check with the things, verify citations, “blue book” it, index to our set of facts, and call me in the morning.”
Instant effective legal doc production ++ hyper informed agenic multi-layer workflows.
Compare to :
Westlaw.
I’ve said before Lexis AI tool in my opinion is far superior to Westlaw. It gives “one right answer” whereas Westlaw gives 82 things to think about.
RELX group’s Lexis is a far larger database.
Yes Westlaw has a far larger 3-to-1 market share of legal research business.
Will Thomson Reuters’ Westlaw jump in next? Does it have plans if it’s own? It just drubbed opponent “first lawbot” Ross Intelligence in Copyright court.
The integration of ChatGPT Enterprise into LexisNexis’ global teams further underscores the commitment to boosting productivity and addressing customer needs efficiently.
This move aligns with LexisNexis’ broader strategy of selecting the best AI models for specific legal use cases.
“SPECIFIC SPECIFIC SPECIFIC WINS AI FOR LAW.”
Many more turns expected in just the coming months (weeks? days?)
