“Get SMOL.”
As I have been preaching countless times since this January, in video and writing that, for the context of AI/LAW — SMALL is the new BIG and SLM > LLM! For Law it is The.Onlyway. So, listen to GOOSE TEETH!
But why SMOL? [And not SMOL…]
This is because — the USE CASE.
The Use Case (what you are trying to accomplish) must/does dictate the tool/s that you use. Tool driven decisions pre-embed decay.
[“If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.”]
Using just one tool for every use case is a recipe for failure.
This goes for LLMs. And yes sometimes AI Counsel’s fave rave, SLMs for LAW and more.
Think about that flathead screwdriver, and for some of us unrecovered Bachelors in the City, the butter knife for screws. Fine for a flat-head and mostly good most of the time. Then you come across a Phillips screw and still go w the butter knife and guess what? You’re stripping that screw over time.
I once “bragged” (yeah, you know me) to Keith, a senior engineer at PG+E (we were Scout leaders together) that “I don’t need a Phillips, I do everything with a flat head,” and “See you can use a flat head for both but not a Phillips for both so (I am smart) I have an ‘all-purpose’ trusty flat head.”
It was then that the concepts of concaved, angling, and torque were explained patiently to me in very great slow detail. It was very good for me. Thanks Keith. Using the wrong tool leads not just to bad operations but FAILURE AND DESTRUCTION over time.
Yes this will go for big fat bloated LLMs for Law use. Too much data means degraded outputs in AI/Law. And many do not know what they are asking and do not know what they are receiving. And who wants episode transcript of Ally MacBeal mixed in with their legal analysis anyhow?!
Yet here want to talk about the converse.
Don’t strip the screw.
Sometimes you want an aggregate huge search. GPT or LLAMA or GEMINI or MISTRAL……………………………………..
When?
Use Case: I am trying to find anything everything about a subject for research purposes.
Sometimes we want the cover the waterfront of the data world to find that needle in the haystack w a few keyterms, names, company, document, statement…
But, wait, there’s more.
Like to SEARCH ALL THE LLMS AT ONCE?
‘Yes we can, Si Se Puede!’

Go here to GitHub. GitHub is like a garage sale of code designs. Much of it is junk and unintelligible and esoteric. “Nerdware.” But also extremely cutting edge and experimental and thus out of the dross developing some of the neatest new tools in real time — usually overnight toked on many Diet Cokes.
Yeah, I know. Me too. Ask your developer friend. Don’t have one? Make three (trust me)…
